How Many Ounces Is A Cereal Bowl

How Many Ounces Is A Cereal Bowl? The Answer May Surprise You!

For the first ten years of my life, I didn’t know what cereal was. Growing up in a third-world country in South Asia, our breakfast looked quite different from what Americans are used to.

So, when I first visited the United States as a 10-year-old, I was filled with awe when my aunt offered me cereal and milk in a bowl for breakfast. Presented pleasingly and crafted to deliver exquisite taste, I was a fan from day one.

Fast forward to 15 years later, cereal and milk in a bowl is my staple breakfast. I’d treat myself to a wholesome amount of cereal and a generous serving of milk every morning before dashing out to work.

This was the norm up until recently when my dietician friend Ravi urged me to watch the portion. Apparently, cereal is not as healthy and nutritious as cereal companies tell us. No surprises there. Yikes!

So, I was determined to find out the ‘right’ serving size. Although cereal is the first choice of breakfast for most people in many corners of the world, it turns out there’s not much information available on what’s the right or recommended serving size.

For instance, how many ounces is a cereal bowl? I had no clue. So, I put on my thinking cap and set out to find out the real answer. With a myriad of contradictory answers littering the good old internet, it was no easy task.

I’ve presented all of my findings below!

Table Of Content

How Many Ounces Is A Cereal Bowl?

A regular-sized cereal bowl holds around 8 ounces of liquid, which is the recommended serving size by most cereal brands. However, when the milk and cereal are added, the bowl’s content will rise to the brim, making it easy to spill.

Therefore, you should get a bowl that holds at least 12 ounces of fluid.

The bowl’s shape doesn’t matter as much as the holding capacity does.

4 Things To Look For When Getting A Cereal Bowl

Getting a cereal bowl is probably one of the simplest things you’d do in life – at least at face value. But if you give it a thought, there are a couple of things to consider. The material, design, capacity, and maintenance are the 4 key facets of finding your perfect cereal bowl.

Material

The first thing to consider is the cereal bowl’s material – yes, even before the aesthetics. What material a cereal bowl is made from will determine whether it will work for you or not.

A cereal bowl is usually made of porcelain, tempered glass, or plastic. Some are a tad bit more exquisite and therefore expensive, being made of stoneware.

So, factors like the bowl’s weight, durability, heat-resistant capacity, microwave-safe feature, and dishwasher-friendly feature come into play. Ideally, you’d want a bowl that ticks all of the aforementioned requirements.

If you’re getting a cereal bowl for kids, you’d want something unbreakable yet lightweight.

Design

The options you have when getting a cereal bowl is astonishing. They come in all kinds of colors, sizes, and shapes.

You might want to buy a bowl in a color that matches the rest of your dinnerware. Or maybe, you want to switch it up and get them in different, funky colors.

When it comes to shape, you can choose from classic round-shaped bowls to edgy square-shaped bowls. Nowadays, you can even find bowls with an ergonomic design that are supposedly easy to hold.

The bowl’s design also dictates how easy or difficult it is to clean, and it’s definitely something you should consider.

Capacity

In line with our main query today, the bowl’s capacity is one of the key features to keep in mind when shopping for cereal bowls. So naturally, it’s essential to consider how much the bowl holds of your favorite cereal without the risks of spilling.

I’d recommend getting a deep bowl to mitigate the risks of spilling. But it shouldn’t be that deep either. The bowl’s structure should allow you to scrape up every last bit of whatever cereal you’re eating.

Maintenance

Right off the bat, one might wonder what kind of maintenance a mere cereal bowl needs. But my friend, here’s a look at a few maintenance features to pay attention to.

Can you wash the bowl in a dishwasher? Is it microwave-safe? Does it stack well and take up less space? How easily can it be cleaned and stored? These are just a few questions to ask yourself before getting the bowl.
