While at it, I came across some interesting tequila trivia, like how we can make diamonds out of tequila! Yes, you read that right.

Anyway, more on the quiz show later. Let’s first get to the heart of the query.

How Much Alcohol Is There In A Shot Of Tequila?

A shot of tequila contains 1.5 fluid ounces. Usually, at 80 proof, tequila is 40% pure alcohol. Even at max, tequila won’t be more than 50% ABV (100 proof).

And that brings us to our next question!

How Many Shots Of Tequila Will Get You Drunk?

Well, the answer entirely depends on your alcohol threshold. Most people feel intoxicated with around 2 or 3 shots. However, the time taken and the extent of toxicity depend on factors like age, weight, sex, and stomach content.

This one research showed that a typical American would only get mildly drunk with two shots of tequila before becoming moderately drunk with the fourth shot.

In the States, a person is considered “legally drunk” if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is 0.08% or higher. As the name suggests, this indicates the percentage of how much alcohol there is per 100 ml of blood.

And generally, it takes around 2 to 3 standard tequila shots consumed within an hour by a 100-150 lbs person for the BAC level to go beyond 0.08%.

Your BAC will only increase about 90 seconds after taking the shot. Also, you will become tipsy about 15-20 minutes after consuming the shots.

Now that you’re acquainted with the concept of BAC, let’s move on to our next segment.

What Happens If You Take Too Many Tequila Shots?

Alcohol is a depressant and impacts the overall nervous system – causing a change in the drinker’s thinking and motion. So, if you take too many tequila shots, you’ll begin showing the common signs of drunkenness.

Here’s a quick look at what happens at different BAC levels:

0.02% – You will feel relaxed and normal but might experience a change in mood.

0.05% – You will feel euphoric and will be quite expressive of feelings sans restraint. You will also become less attentive and have blurry vision.

0.08% – You will need help maintaining balance, speaking coherently, hearing, and even seeing. Naturally, your memory and judgment will be impaired.

0.10% – You will experience slower reaction time, poor arm and leg coordination, slurred speech, nausea, and compromised cognitive abilities.

0.15-0.29% – You will have little control over your body and need assistance walking. You might also experience difficulty breathing, unsteady emotions, and mood alterations. Blackouts, disorientation, and vomiting are common. You are also prone to falling and sleeping.

0.30-0.39% – Now, this is dangerous. You can possibly suffer from alcohol poisoning, which leads to fainting and loss of bladder control.

0.40% – You might fall into a coma and die.

So, you see, the least harm that can be inflicted is a hangover. The worst is that you’re putting your life and someone else’s in jeopardy. So, drink responsibly.

Now, did I put you off? Don’t worry – the next section will cheer you up.

Can Non-Alcohol Tequila Get You Drunk?

Most non-alcohol spirits, including tequila, of course, have less than 0.5% ABV per bottle. So, even if you take 2-7 shots of non-alcoholic tequila, your BAC won’t reach the “legally drunk” level.

So, you’d have to take approximately 240-320 shots of no-alcohol tequila to consume the same amount as you’d do when drinking one standard shot of alcoholic tequila. And I doubt you’ll take that many in one sitting.

So, that’s a wrap for today. To sum it all up, a shot contains 1.5 fluid ounces (44ml). And it costs anywhere between $5 to $15!
